First Tee of Tulsa
The First Tee of Tulsa is a chapter of the national First Tee program located at Mohawk Park Golf Course. It’s mission is to impact the lives of young people by providing a learning facility and educational program that promotes character development and life - enhancing values through the game of golf. Tulsa’s chapter is one of the largest junior golf programs in the United States.
Since it’s inception in 2001, in excess of 5400 students have enrolled in The First Tee of Tulsa. There is no cost to the student and the equipment is provided during the classes. A 1/2 million dollar clubhouse is reserved primarily for the use of The First Tee students. The program is directed by Janice Gibson, former LPGA Tour Player/ PGA Teaching Professional.
Ages of the students range from 8 - 18 and beginners to advanced players participate. There are 3 sessions held at Mohawk Golf Course every year - spring, summer, and fall. Each session consists of 7 lessons held once a week. There are 4 different levels in which the child progresses - Par, Birdie, Eagle and Ace. In each level the student must pass designated golf skills and life skills to proceed to the next level. In 2006, over 1150 kids were enrolled in the classes which included over 40 organizations and schools.
